Bay Area Video Coalition (BAVC)

The Bay Area Video Coalition (BAVC) is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization founded in 1976 to support freedom of expression by making advanced media technology accessible to independent media makers and nonprofit organizations. BAVC’s ongoing mission is to inspire social change by enabling the sharing of diverse stories through art, education and technology.

Calvert Giving Fund is the socially responsible donor advised fund complex of Calvert Foundation. With hundreds of philanthropic asset accounts that invest in social purpose funds and enterprises, and make grants to nonprofits globally, it is particularly oriented to media endeavors and funds a range of projects in the US and abroad. It has offices in Bethesda, MD and San Francisco, CA.

The Center for Asian American Media (CAAM) is a non-profit organization dedicated to presenting stories that convey the richness and diversity of Asian American experiences to the broadest audience possible.  We do this by funding, producing, distributing and exhibiting works in film, television and digital media.

At the Center for Social Media investigate, showcase and set standards for socially engaged media-making. We organize conferences and convenings, publish research, create codes of best practices, and incubate media strategies.

The Change Making Media Lab (CMML) is an emerging organization whose mission is to foster positive social and environmental change by engaging in research on effective cinematic media techniques and creating strategic high-impact cinema, television, and multi-media  to inspire individuals, organizations, and communities into action.  CMML’s vision is to aid advocacy groups to leverage the power of the cinematic arts to achieve health, sustainability, and social justice. CMML is strategically housed within the University of Southern California (USC) School of Cinematic Arts, one of the premiere film schools in the country.

GrantCraft is a source of practical wisdom from grantmakers on the tools and techniques of effective grantmaking. GrantCraft offers guides, videos, and case studies that present the practitioners’ view of a web-based resource for grantmakers interested in reflecting on and improving their practice in philanthropy.

Grantmakers for Effective Organizations is a coalition of grantmakers committed to building strong and effective nonprofit organizations. Understanding that grantmakers are successful only to the extent that their grantees achieve meaningful results, GEO promotes strategies and practices that contribute to grantee success.  GEO provides philanthropy’s change agents with the resources, ideas and connections they need to make the greatest contribution to the nonprofits they invest in. Currently, GEO has more than 1700 individual members representing 350 grantmaking organizations.

The Independent Television Service (ITVS) brings independently-produced, high-quality public broadcast and new media programs to local, national and international audiences. The independent producers who create ITVS programs take creative risks, tackle complex issues and express points of view seldom explored in the mass media. ITVS programs enrich the cultural landscape with the voices and visions of underrepresented communities, and reflect the interests and concerns of a diverse society.  ITVS supports a dynamic field of independent media makers whose programs creatively engage audiences, expand cultural awareness and catalyze civic participation.

Latino Public Broadcasting supports the development, production, acquisition and distribution of non-commercial educational and cultural television that is representative of Latino people, or addresses issues of particular interest to Latino Americans. These programs are produced for dissemination to the public broadcasting stations and other public telecommunication entities. By acting as minority consortium, LPB provides a voice to the diverse Latino community throughout the United States.

NAMAC is the national service organization that energizes independent voices through the media arts. By encouraging dialogue, collaboration, research, and advocacy, NAMAC defines and anticipates the currents in which professionals and organizations creatively thrive. As an intermediary support organization representing 300+ member organizations nationwide, NAMAC is central to a network that reflects America’s ethnic and geographic diversity throughout the public media environment. Our membership roster includes community-based digital media and technology centers, public media (radio, TV, web) broadcasters, university programs, film exhibitors, K-12 youth media and digital literacy programs, and visual artist service organizations. Much of the non-commercial and independently produced media seen on public television, in schools, in local community venues, and through online streaming has been supported and sustained by NAMAC member organizations.

For thirty years NBPC has been an effective advocate for media makers telling stories about the African American and African  Diaspora experience. Since 1991, NBPC has awarded over seven million dollars to independent filmmakers, whose work has provided several hundreds of hours of programming to the PBS system. NBPC has supported or acquired high profile productions such as Lynda Goode Bryant’s award-winning Flag Wars, Julie Dash’s feature classic Daughters of the Dust, Rodney Evans’ Brother to Brother, Spike Lee’s A Huey P. Newton Story, Stanley Nelson’s The Murder of Emmett Till, and Yvonne Smith’s Parliament Funkadelic: One Nation Under a Groove.

The San Francisco Film Society is Northern California’s premiere organization for filmmakers and cineastes.  Internationally recognized throughout its first half-century of groundbreaking activity, and poised to dynamically respond to the rapidly changing needs of its industry and constituents well into the future, the Film Society offers an inclusive and rewarding range of year-round public programs that investigate and celebrate the artistry and innovation of the world’s most pivotal and imaginative cinematic visionaries.
